Ward Chili Cook-off

Do I dare take a vegetarian chili? I live where people are definitely meat eaters.
I was thinking of calling it "Word of Wisdom Chili", including in it lentils and bulghur.
Or is it an exercise in futility, with people only thinking ever more weird things about me?

Go for it! Don't tell them what is in it until after you win. :)

Found your blog from the Segullah sampler. I have to say, Word Of Wisdom Chili is about the funniest thing I've ever heard. I say do it and do it proud. I am planning to steal this idea and soon!

I say go for it too, and be unapologetic about the lack of meat.

Lentils and bulghur sound delish to me, but be sure it looks like chili. By choosing lentil and bulgur, you're choosing to sell not only meatless chili, but chili featuring the "exotic" lentil and bulgur. Use chili as a seasoning, and include some bean traditionally associated with chili, such as red kidney beans, or tomatoes. Though some of the meat purists will make chili without tomatoes or beans.

In my experience, the vegetarian chili that sells best with a crowd has corn and tomatoes and bell pepper in it, possibly also zucchini (small dice). Like this Emeril Lagasse Toppings like cheese, avocado, or sour cream also increase appeal. Think like a caterer, what will "sell." Of course, I write this not having tasted your lentils and bulgur recipe!

Oh, you posted this more than a week ago--did you do it? how did it go?
